Sydney Writers’ Festival is a registered charity and a not-for-profit organisation. In an ordinary year, ticket sales, sponsorship and philanthropic funding would cover over 70% of our Festival and Education programs, ensuring we can cover the costs of presenting the most important and exciting writers and thinkers from Australia and around the world. But this year, we need your help more than ever.

The decision to cancel the 2020 Festival was made with the health and safety of authors, audiences, staff, publishers, volunteers and our community at the forefront. We recognise that this decision will have a significant impact on the literary community, and especially on writers whose work was to be featured for the first time in this program.

We urge you to support these authors and your local booksellers in what is sure to be a challenging year. Please look to the Festival’s digital channels as we highlight, support and celebrate the work of the writers who were going to appear on the 2020 program.

We rely on the support of private individuals and forward-thinking corporations from our community to help us safeguard the future of Australia’s largest literary festival and bring the joy of books to diverse audiences around the country and the Festival that enriches the cultural life of the city. In fact, more than a third of our annual funding comes from philanthropy and corporate sponsorship.

"Sydney Writers’ Festival for me has been a much needed reminder that even in dark times human beings can come together through those holy acts of reading and writing."

— George Saunders, 2017 Sydney Writers' Festival guest
