Emily Perkins
International
Emily Perkins is an award-winning writer from Aotearoa New Zealand. Her most recent novel, Lioness, won the NZ Book Award for Fiction in 2024. Other books include Novel About My Wife, winner of the Believer Book of the Year Award and the Montana Medal for Fiction and the Women’s Prize longlisted The Forrests.
Her work for theatre, film and television includes the original play The Made and an adaptation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House with Auckland Theatre Company. She co-wrote feature film The Rehearsal and worked on television drama After the Party.
Emily has taught creative writing since the early 2000s, including at the Arvon Foundation and as a mentor at Goldsmith’s College in the UK. She convened the MA in Fiction at Victoria University of Wellington’s International Institute of Modern Letters for several years. Most recently, along with Charlotte Wood, she co-presents the masterclass series Elements of Fiction and Elements of the Writing Life.
Emily is a member of the Folio Academy, an Arts Foundation Laureate and in 2017 was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature.
