Turning sex and marriage on their heads in alternative Eden

This event has been cancelled. Unfortunately Sayaka Murata is no longer able to join us at the Sydney Writers’ Festival.
Sayaka Murata worked part time in convenience stores for 18 years before her breakout success with Convenience Store Woman.
Now she is one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary Japanese writers and has won all of Japan’s major literary prizes. In Vanishing World, Sayaka explores love, marriage and sex through her boundary-pushing and bizarre lens. In a world where all children are conceived through artificial insemination and all sex is extramarital, what is the purpose of marriage and is there another way?
Listen to Sayaka, joined by Spectrum’s Melanie Kembrey, discuss this dark, speculative alternative to families as we know them.
Sayaka will be speaking in Japanese and will be translated into English by a live interpreter.
