Richard McGregor is a senior fellow for east Asia at the Lowy Institute in Sydney. He is an award-winning journalist and author with extensive experience in reporting on the top-level politics and economies of east Asia, primarily China and Japan, and the US. He was a correspondent for the ABC and The Australian in Japan and China, and the Financial Times bureau chief in Beijing, Shanghai and Washington. His 2010 book, The Party, on the Chinese Communist Party, was called a “masterpiece” by The Economist and won numerous awards. His latest book, Asia's Reckoning, on Sino-Japanese relations and the fate of US power in east Asia, was published in late 2017. He was a fellow at the Wilson Center in 2015 and a visiting scholar at George Washington University in 2016.
