Presented in association with the Sydney Writers' Festival

3–4 November at the Seymour Centre

We’re thrilled to announce that we are partnering with our Melbourne colleagues to bring the first Sports Writers Festival program to Sydney. With four sessions across two days in November, the Sports Writers Festival brings together esteemed journalists, writers and readers who share a passion for sport and great writing.

Now in its third year, curated by ABC TV broadcaster and journalist Francis Leach, the Sports Writers Festival explores ethics, money, power and politics identity and culture through a series of passionate and entertaining conversations.

The 2017 Sports Writers Festival opens on Friday 3 November with renowned author and journalist Peter FitzSimon delivering the festival's first oration in Sydney. The author, former Wallaby and Chair of the Australian Republican Movement will address the idea that sport is more than just about scoreboard and balance sheets: sport should be a powerful force in building stronger, vibrant, healthy communities. Is sport in Australia keeping its promise?

On Saturday 4 November, Steve Mascord sits down with Francis Leach to discuss his book Touchstones, his love affair with Rugby League and why heavy metal is the one true rock religion; Andrew Managan talks about creating Arseblog and Arsecast, his passion for Arsenal, his thoughts on the future of football and fandom, and his enduring love for Robert Pires; and Melinda Farrell, Peter Lalor, Malcolm Knox and Cate McGregor explore Australia’s love for The Ashes.

We hope you join us at the Seymour Centre on 3 and 4 November to celebrate sport through the written word.
