Swashbuckling folk hero Jack Sheppard gets a postmodern makeover in Jordy Rosenberg’s Confessions of the Fox. The story swirls around a transgender academic who discovers a long-lost, gender-defying exposé of the 18th-century London renegade’s adventures. It has been called “a cunning metafiction of vulpine versatility” (The New Yorker), “so goddamned good” (Carmen Maria Machado), and “a joyous mash-up of literary genres shot through with queer theory and awash in sex, crime, and revolution” (The New York Times). Rosenberg discusses his daring debut in conversation with Peter Polites.
