It is my great pleasure to introduce Sydney Writers' Festival's exciting new School Days program for 2008.
Over the last decade, the Festival has grown from strength to strength and we are now considered one of the finest literary festivals in the world.
School Days has been a popular and important component of the Festival from the very beginning. Each year we invite students to experience a wonderful program assembled just for them; to interact with, learn from and be inspired by some of their favourite writers.
In 2008, School Days returns to Sydney Theatre at Walsh Bay and Riverside Theatres at Parramatta with a diverse program for both primary and secondary schools and, for the first time, we're inviting lower primary school students to join in the fun!
I was fortunate to have parents who introduced me to the wonder of books at a very early age and I never looked back. At Sydney Writers' Festival, we are committed to investing in the readers and writers of the future. Whether reluctant or avid readers, we hope our School Days events will encourage students to find their own pathway through literature and to fall in love with books and reading, not to mention the creative process of writing. Many writers I know were first inspired by exposure to a writer in their school-aged years. Who knows, a new Kate Grenville or Tom Keneally could be amongst the lucky students who attend School Days 2008.

About School Days – 19-23 May 2008
After a successful, sell-out 2007 season, Sydney Writers' Festival is thrilled to bring you its School Days program for 2008.
Teachers, this is a fantastic opportunity to inspire your students and give them the chance to engage with their favourite writers while introducing them to many new ones.
In the hugely popular Primary and Secondary Days sessions, writers and illustrators will perform, read from their work, talk about their craft and take questions from students.
Our workshops give senior high school students the chance to explore creative writing, graphic novel illustration and playwriting with award-winning writers and illustrators.
For junior primary students, Monkey Baa Theatre for Young People presents its stage adaptation of Stephen Michael King's Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat at Riverside Theatres.
Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) will adapt several texts for performance during Primary and Secondary Days. Students will be taken on a fabulous theatrical journey, as atyp brings extracts from our authors' books to life.
