DELIA FALCONER (LOCAL)
Delia Falconer is the author of two novels, The Service of Clouds and The Lost Thoughts of Soldiers, shortlisted for awards including the Miles Franklin, Commonwealth Prize (Asia Pacific Region) and the Spur Awards for western writing. She is currently editing Best Australian Stories 2008 and The Penguin Book of the Road, both of which will be published in November this year. A Sydney-based critic and essayist, she is the 2008 Scholar in Writing at UTS.

KATHLEEN MARY FALLON (INTERSTATE)Fallon, Kathleen Mary
Kathleen Mary Fallon worked as a nurse/carer in an institution for children with disabilities, where she fostered a young Torres Strait Islander boy. Paydirt, her most recent book, is a fictionalised account of her experiences.

Her other work extends across a variety of media and includes the novel Working Hot (winner of a Victorian Premier’s Award for Innovative Writing) and librettos for the opera Matricide – The Musical (composed by Elena Kats-Chernin and presented by Chamber Made Opera). She wrote the song cycle Laquiem: Tales From the Mourning of the Lac Women (composed by Andree Greenwell) as well as the 2007 AWGIE Award-nominated script for the film Call Me Mum (directed by Margot Nash and produced by Michael McMahon).

Kathleen currently lectures in creative writing at The University of Melbourne.

AIMEE FALZON (LOCAL)
Aimée Falzon is a young multidisciplinary performing and creative artist. She writes as a lyricist, poet and playwright.

She has recently developed a series of interactive scripts for Powerhouse Youth Theatre and Macquarie Legal Centre which toured throughout Western Sydney high schools in 2007 and 2008. With CuriousWorks last year Aimée researched and wrote the role of Honora for their interdisciplinary production this city is a body as part of the 2007 Sydney Writers’ Festival.

As a performer Aimée has trained with the Actors Centre Australia and studied performance at the University of Sydney. Continuing with the Australian Theatre for Young People, she has performed in nine productions over the last six years, including Skate for the Belfast Festival in Ireland. Aimée also shows a significant interest, talent and future in illustrations and photography.

Elizabeth Farrelly is a columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald.

She trained as an architect in Auckland, practised in London and Bristol and holds a PhD in architecture from the University of Sydney, where she is also Adjunct Associate Professor. She has been assistant editor of The Architectural Review in London, an independent Councillor in the City of Sydney and inaugural Chair of the Australia Award for Urban Design.

Elizabeth’s writing awards include the Marion Mahony Griffin Award, the Pascall Prize for Critical Writing, the Adrian Ashton Award and the Paris-based CICA award for international criticism. Elizabeth now lives in Sydney with her partner and two children. Her latest book is Blubberland: The Dangers of Happiness.

Laurence Fearnley has written six novels. Room was shortlisted for the 2001 Montana New Zealand Book Awards and her latest Edwin and Matilda has been widely hailed as the 2007 New Zealand book of the year. She has held the 2004 Artists to the Antarctica fellowship and the 2007 Robert Burns fellowship at the University of Otago. She lives in Dunedin.

Charles Firth is a co-founder of The Chaser, Australia's longest running fortnightly satirical newspaper.

His TV credits include The Election Chaser, CNNNN: Chaser Non-stop News Network, The Chaser Decides and The Chaser's War on Everything.

Charles has also worked as a writer/presenter on Australia's Triple M network, and co-written and edited five comedy books in The Chaser Annual series. American Hoax is his first book, which he wrote after living in America.

JEREMY FISHER (LOCAL)Fisher, Jeremy
Jeremy Fisher has extensive experience in the Australian publishing industry as writer, editor and publisher. He worked as an editor and publishing manager for nearly 30 years before moving into rights management and advocacy roles. He was President of the Society of Editors (NSW) in 1996 and a member of the Board of the Australian Publishers' Association 1998-2000. In 1984 Fisher was awarded the inaugural Gold Medal of the Australian Society of Indexers (AusSI) for his indexing of The Australian Encyclopaedia, 4th edition.

As a writer, he was first published in 1974 and has written many works in a wide range of genres since then. Fisher's writing encompasses fiction, poetry, prose, reviews and critical articles. His novel for young adults, Perfect Timing, has been his most commercially successful work to date.

In 2004, Fisher was appointed Executive Director of the Australian Society of Authors.

Roland Fishman created The Writers' Studio in 1992. Since then, thousands of people have done his creative writing courses, both live at the Bronte studio and online. The courses cater for people just starting out and those who want to write novels and screenplays.

He has been a professional writer since 1980, has published three books written for The Sydney Morning Herald, Financial Review and Good Weekend.

LIONEL FOGARTY (LOCAL)Fogarty, Lionel

Lionel Fogarty is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most significant and innovative poets, combining a passionate political voice with a unique approach to language. He was born on Wakka Wakka land at Barambah, now known as Cherbourg Aboriginal Reserve near Murgon, Queensland. His traditional background is the Yoogum and Kudjela tribes and he has relations from the Goomba tribe.

He is well known for his work as an activist, especially on the issues of land rights and Aboriginal deaths in custody. His first work, Kargun, was published when he was 22. With the approval of his elders he has published a children's book Booyooburra, a traditional Wakka Wakka story. His latest book is Dha'lan Djani Mitti.

Bernadette Foley is a publisher of non-fiction and fiction for the Hachette Australia and Orbit imprints of Hachette Livre Australia. She has worked for Hachette for four years. Previously, she worked in-house at Pan Macmillan and as a freelance editor for most of the leading trade publishers.

With Dr John Dale she established the Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing at the University of Technology, Sydney, and was a member of the Australia Council/APA committee that set up the Residential Editorial Program.

She was a recipient of the Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellowship in 1996. The authors she publishes include Hugh Mackay, William McInnes, Lian Hearn, Pamela Freeman, Penelope Green and Bronwyn Parry.

Mem Fox was born in Australia, grew up in Africa, studied drama in England, and returned to Adelaide, Australia in 1970, where she has lived with her husband, Malcolm, and daughter Chloë, happily ever after.

Mem Fox is Australia’s most highly regarded picture-book author. Her first book, Possum Magic, is the best selling children’s book ever in Australia, with sales of over three million. And in the USA Time for Bed and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge have each sold over a million copies. Time for Bed is on Oprah’s list of the 20 best children’s books of all time.

Mem has written over 30 picture books for children and five non-fiction books for adults, including the best-selling Reading Magic, aimed at parents of very young children.

Mem Fox was an Associate Professor in literacy studies at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, where she taught teachers for 24 years until her early retirement in 1996.

She has received many civic awards, honours and accolades in Australia, including two honorary doctorates. She has visited the United States 101 times, mostly in her role as a literacy expert although she is also a major author in America. She is currently a hectic international consultant in literacy, but pretends to sit around writing full time.

Her latest book is Where The Giant Sleeps.

MARIA FREIJ (LOCAL)Freij, Maria
Maria Freij is a PhD candidate in creative writing at the University of Newcastle where she also teaches. Her theoretical work focuses on literary representations of melancholy, place, and identity. She is also interested in translation between English, Swedish, and French, especially of poetry.

Maria has presented her work in Australia and Europe and her poems have appeared and are forthcoming in journals and anthologies. Her collection, I Was Here, won the University’s Harri Jones Memorial Prize in 2007.
