trope is a new space in Second Life promoting creative writing in virtual environments. The roundtable features trope's creators alongside writers selected for the first iteration, discussing the dynamics of this intersection between literature and new media. Participants include Cristyn Davies, Elena Knox, Sarah Waterson, Jeremy Fisher, Keri Glastonbury, Gary Hayes, Sara Knox, Louise Wakeling and Fiona Wright, chaired by Jill Jones.

This project is supported by the Literature Board of The Australia Council for the Arts and The University of Western Sydney.

CRISTYN DAVIES (LOCAL)
Cristyn Davies is a writer and editor working in research at the University of Western Sydney. She is the curator and editor of trope.


JEREMY FISHER (LOCAL)Fisher, Jeremy
Jeremy Fisher has extensive experience in the Australian publishing industry as writer, editor and publisher. He worked as an editor and publishing manager for nearly 30 years before moving into rights management and advocacy roles. He was President of the Society of Editors (NSW) in 1996 and a member of the Board of the Australian Publishers' Association 1998-2000. In 1984 Fisher was awarded the inaugural Gold Medal of the Australian Society of Indexers (AusSI) for his indexing of The Australian Encyclopaedia, 4th edition.

As a writer, he was first published in 1974 and has written many works in a wide range of genres since then. Fisher's writing encompasses fiction, poetry, prose, reviews and critical articles. His novel for young adults, Perfect Timing, has been his most commercially successful work to date.

In 2004, Fisher was appointed Executive Director of the Australian Society of Authors.

KERI GLASTONBURY (LOCAL)
Keri Glastonbury is a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Newcastle and poetry editor of Overland and local consumption publications.


GARY HAYES (LOCAL)
Gary Hayes is the Director of the Laboratory of Advanced Media Production and Head of Virtual Worlds for TPF. He was BBC Senior Development Manager, New Media.


JILL JONES (LOCAL)Jones, Jill
Jill Jones’ work has been widely published in most of the leading literary periodicals in Australia as well as in a number of print and online magazines in New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Britain and India.

In 1993 she won the Mary Gilmore Award for her first book of poetry, The Mask and the Jagged Star. Her fifth full-length book, Broken/Open, was published in 2005. It was shortlisted for The Age Poetry Book of the Year and the Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize.

ELENA KNOX (LOCAL)
Elena Knox makes work across text, video, sound, installation and performance. She has contributed to the curation, conceptual design and sonic topography of trope.


SARA KNOX (LOCAL)
Sara Knox is the author of Murder: a Tale of Modern American Life, and teaches cultural history and creative writing at the University of Western Sydney. The Orphan Gunner is her first novel; it was shortlisted for the 2008 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for First Book.

LOUISE WAKELING (LOCAL)
Louise Wakeling is a member of the Sydney ekphrasis group, Diverse. Her poetry collection paragliding in a war-zone is forthcoming.


SARAH WATERSON (LOCAL)
Sarah Waterson is a new media artist and senior lecturer in interactive media at UWS. She developed the conceptual approach, design and implementation for trope.


FIONA WRIGHT (LOCAL)
Fiona Wright, project assistant with The Red Room Company and assistant editor of HEAT, is a poet and editor.
