Of all intergenerational relationships, the mother-daughter bond is often considered the most significant. Susan Varga and Gabrielle Carey talk to Rowena Danziger about their recent books which observe the mother-daughter relationship later in life.
SUSAN VARGA (LOCAL) SUSAN VARGA is the author of two prize-winning books, Heddy and Me and Happy Families, and Broometime with Anne Coombs. Her new novel is Headlong. She is also a community activist, co-founder of Rural Australians for Refugees.
ROWENA DANZIGER AM (LOCAL) ROWENA DANZIGER AM was headmistress of Ascham School (1973-2003). She has been a Member of the Board of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) since 1997 and is a Director of Crown. She is currently Chairman of the Art Gallery Foundation, has been a Director of Opera Australia since 1989 and was Chairman of the Board from 2001-2003. She is a Director of the Board of Sydney Writers’ Festival.
GABRIELLE CAREY (LOCAL) GABRIELLE CAREY published her first co-authored book, Puberty Blues, at the age of 20. She then travelled and lived between Ireland and Mexico for several years before returning to Australia. Carey is the author of fiction and non-fiction books, including In My Father’s House, The Borrowed Girl, So Many Selves and, most recently, Waiting Room: A Memoir. She teaches writing at the University of Technology, Sydney.
