Metaphors of Space

An architectural display and poetry reading that blends the narratives of sustainable, urban and indigenous interpretations of home and public space. Convened by Chris L. Smith from the University of Sydney, who will speak about ‘Autopoiesis: Poetries and Architectures’, it features the work of several young emerging architects. There are cameo readings by David Musgrave, Elizabeth Hodgson, Peter Boyle, Pam Brown and Andy Quan.

ELIZABETH HODGSON (LOCAL)Hodgson, Elizabeth
ELIZABETH HODGSON is a Wiradjuri woman who spent her childhood in a home for fair-skinned Aboriginal children in a Sydney suburb. After spending many years travelling, Hodgson decided to settle in Wollongong. She has been officially welcomed into Wadi Wadi country and has explored her Aboriginality and spirituality in depth since moving there over a decade ago. Her book, Skin Paintings, won the 2007 David Unaipon Award.

ANDY QUAN (LOCAL)Quan, Andy
ANDY QUAN’s new collection of poetry is Bowling Pin Fire. He is the author of three books, one of short fiction, Calendar Boy, one of poetry, Slant, and one of gay erotica, Six Positions. He was the co-editor of Swallowing Clouds, an anthology of Chinese-Canadian poetry. His work has appeared in a broad range of anthologies, magazines and literary reviews in Australia, Canada and elsewhere. Born in Vancouver of Cantonese origins, he now risks his life cycling the streets of Sydney where he has lived since 1999. Andy works as a consultant for regional and international HIV and AIDS issues.

PAM BROWN (LOCAL)Brown, Pam
PAM BROWN has published many books of poetry including Dear Deliria, which won the NSW Premier’s Prize for Poetry in 2004. Her most recent book is True Thoughts. Another collection, Authentic Local, is due in June 2009. She is the associate editor of Jacket magazine.


PETER BOYLE (LOCAL)Boyle, Peter
PETER BOYLE lives in Sydney. He was a recipient of the NSW Premier's Award, the South Australian Festival Award and the National Book Council Award for his first two collections. Museum of Space was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier’s Award. Peter’s translations include The Trees: Selected Poems of Eugenio Montejo, translations of Federico Garcia Lorca, Luis Cernuda, César Vallejo, Pierre Reverdy, René Char and Yves Bonnefoy. In 2004 he was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Award for translation. The Apocrypha of William O’Shaunessy will be released in 2009.


CHRIS L. SMITH (LOCAL)Smith, ChrisL
CHRIS L. SMITH is a lecturer in architectural design and the coordinator of Architectural Technologies in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney. He has published papers on the political philosophy of Giles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, technologies of the body and 'the eclipse of Darwinism’ phase. This year, he will teach the sustainable stream of the Masters of Architecture Program and Contemporary Architectural Theory. He is currently co-editing Architecture in the Space of Flows with Andrew Ballantyne.


DAVID MUSGRAVE (LOCAL)Musgrave, David
DAVID MUSGRAVE is the publisher at Puncher & Wattmann, which he founded in 2005. A poet, novelist and critic, he has published three books. Open Water, a CD of his poetry readings, was released in 2007. In 2008 David was awarded the Josephine Ulrick and Newcastle poetry prizes as well as the Alec Bolton Prize for an unpublished poetry manuscript. His first novel will be published in 2009 as well as Grotesque Anatomies, his study of Menippean satire. His forthcoming books of poetry are Phantom Limb and The Baby Boomers. He teaches at UNSW.
