Nineteen Eighty-Four Marathon Reading
Event 299

It is a time of secret prisons and torture, of ceaseless distant wars and violent nationalism, of electronic surveillance on every street corner and Big Brother on screens everywhere...

The year is 2008 – or is it 1984?

Marking the 60th anniversary of the writing of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Ariel Booksellers and Blue Mountains author Larry Buttrose are co-hosting a cover-to-cover reading of George Orwell’s classic.

In the Orwellian dystopia of the year 1984, history is destroyed as readily as people are vaporised. The past is rewritten minute by minute so that the Party is always right, and even individual consciousness is controlled by Doublethink, and the terrorising Thought Police. And towering above it all, on billboards and screens everywhere, is the leader in whom the ultimate cult of personality resides, Big Brother.

Drop by and listen, stay for the whole event – or volunteer to read. Includes the presentation of a paper about the novel and the author, the Nineteen Eighty-Four Quiz, and Victory Cocktails at 6pm, followed by a Two Minute Love.
