From Puberty Blues to Tim Winton's Breath, surfing and surf culture continues to hold a valuable place in the Australian cultural landscape. Indeed, as the surfing community has become a broad church, surfing seems to have become the image, metaphor and recreational choice for our times. Surfing writers Tim Baker, Nick Carroll and Sean Doherty paddle you deep into the turbulent waters of the world of surfing and surf writing, with John Meredith.

NICK CARROLL (LOCAL)Carroll, Nick
NICK CARROLL is the world’s best-known writer on the subject of surfing. He grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches and surfed from his pre-teens, competing and travelling worldwide before taking a job at Sydney-based Tracks surf magazine. He edited Tracks from 1983-1986 before freelancing. He also worked as a feature and sports writer for The National Times and The Sydney Morning Herald. From 1990-1997 he lived in California where he was editor-in-chief of Surfing magazine, the world’s biggest-selling surf magazine, and its associated publications. He has since returned to Newport Beach, surfing and writing many articles and several books.


SEAN DOHERTY (LOCAL)Doherty, Sean
SEAN DOHERTY edited iconic surfing magazine Tracks for a decade. Now a freelance writer, his first book, a biography of Australian surfing’s cult hero Michael Peterson, became a national bestseller. In August 2009, Sean will publish Bra Boys, the highly anticipated official biography of the Abberton brothers. Written with the cooperation of the four brothers, Bra Boys will follow their story from its humble beginnings on the sands of Maroubra to global surf stardom, including everything you won’t read in the papers.


JOHN MEREDITH (LOCAL)Meredith, John
JOHN MEREDITH has worked in the film and television industry over the past 22 years. Starting his career as a runner, he worked in a variety of production roles on feature films and television productions before turning his hand to marketing and business development. He was the inaugural Film Commissioner and LA Representative for Ausfilm in Los Angeles, where he facilitated creative and business relationships between the Australian and US film and television industries. He is currently directing a documentary on Indigenous surfing and developing a feature documentary on surf culture.

TIM BAKER is a former editor of Tracks and Surfing Life magazines, and the author of four bestselling books on surfing, including High Surf, Bustin’ Down The Door and Occy: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Mark Occhilupo. Tim's work has appeared in Rolling Stone, GQ, The Australian Financial Review, Inside Sport, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Bulletin, The Australian Way, Playboy, as well as surfing magazines around the world. He has twice received the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame Media/Culture Award and been nominated for the CUB Australian Sports Writing Awards.
