Kate Summerscale talks to Caroline Baum about her history of a sensational Victorian murder and its aftermath. Pioneer sleuth Inspector Jack Whicher’s 1860 case of the murder of a small boy shaped detection, in fact and fiction, and transfixed Britain, including Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens. A riveting true crime story, it is also the story of the birth of forensic science.
CAROLINE BAUM (LOCAL) Caroline Baum was the arts editor of Melbourne’s Sunday Herald and the features editor at Vogue Australia. She has presented ABC TV’s book show Between the Lines, and was executive producer of ABC Radio National’s Arts Today. She has also hosted Foxtel’s book show Talking Books. Caroline became the founding editor of Good Reading magazine in 2001. In 2006 she produced and co-wrote her first television documentary, In Search of Bony, for SBS. Her company, Two Heads Media, currently has several TV projects in development. She is a regular contributor to national newspapers and magazines.
KATE SUMMERSCALE is the former literary editor for The Daily Telegraph (UK) and author of the bestselling The Queen of Whale Cay, which won the Somerset Maugham Award and was shortlisted for the Whitbread biography award. She has also judged various literary competitions including the Booker Prize. The Suspicions of Mr Whicher was awarded the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-fiction 2008 and recently won the British Book Awards – Book of the Year and the Non-Fiction Award. Kate lives in London with her son.
