Chloe Hooper, Louis Nowra, Rachel Perkins and Tohby Riddle discuss their NSW Premier’s Literary Awards shortlisted works with Caroline Baum, sharing the inspiration behind their writing.
LOUIS NOWRA (LOCAL) LOUIS NOWRA is an acclaimed author, screenwriter and playwright. His books include The Misery of Beauty, The Twelfth of Never and the most recent title Bad Dreaming, and his plays include Cosi, The Marvellous Boy and The Golden Age. His latest novel, Ice, is a book about the power of love, told with audacity and breathtaking imaginative power.
CHLOE HOOPER (LOCAL) CHLOE HOOPER’s The Tall Man is her second book and has been published widely to much success. It tells the tragic story of Cameron Doomadgee’s death in the Palm Island police station and the subsequent trial of Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley. Chloe’s early articles on Palm Island written for The Monthly magazine won a Walkley Award. Chloe’s first novel, A Child’s Book of True Crime, was published in many languages. It was a New York Times Notable Book and shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction.
RACHEL PERKINS (LOCAL) RACHEL PERKINS is from the Arrernte and Kalkadoon people. She began working in the film industry at the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) in Alice Springs 20 years ago. Since then she has independently produced and directed a number of major documentary series and has been an executive producer at SBS and ABC TV. She has directed two dramatic features, Radiance and One Night the Moon, which collectively screened at more than 100 film festivals worldwide including London, Toronto and Sundance, and received five AFI awards. She was also a recipient of the Byron Kennedy AFI award. Rachel is currently in post-production on her third feature, Bran Nue Dae. She was one of the directors, co-writers and producers of the seven-hour documentary series First Australians, which screened on SBS in 2008. Rachel serves on the board of National Indigenous TV service and the board of Screen Australia. She is a previous board member and graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
CAROLINE BAUM (LOCAL) Caroline Baum was the arts editor of Melbourne’s Sunday Herald and the features editor at Vogue Australia. She has presented ABC TV’s book show Between the Lines, and was executive producer of ABC Radio National’s Arts Today. She has also hosted Foxtel’s book show Talking Books. Caroline became the founding editor of Good Reading magazine in 2001. In 2006 she produced and co-wrote her first television documentary, In Search of Bony, for SBS. Her company, Two Heads Media, currently has several TV projects in development. She is a regular contributor to national newspapers and magazines.
TOHBY RIDDLE lives in the upper Blue Mountains where he keeps an eye out for snow. He is the author of two cartoon collections and numerous critically acclaimed picture-books, including the recent Nobody Owns the Moon. Nobody Owns the Moon has recently been shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children's Literature and the CBCA Picture Book of the Year. His first novel, The Lucky Ones, was released in 2009.
