Arts and Design Writing: Workshop with Penny Craswell
Event 307
print Print This Page
Penny Craswell gives advice on how to freelance as an arts or design writer, whether you are an artist, designer or other creative professional, or just someone with a passion for the arts.

Get tips on how to get your stories published, including sourcing content, researching which publications to approach and what to include in a pitch to an editor. Learn about the different kinds of arts and design writing, how to get a foot in the door, how to conduct interviews and write interview-based articles and how to hook readers in and develop your own opinions.

There will be one writing exercise in which participants will be asked to write a short descriptive text during the workshop. (Note: This workshop will focus on visual arts and design but will also be relevant for writers on music, theatre, film, dance or literature.)

Turn your passion for the arts into a freelancing career - learn who to approach and how, and workshop your reviewing skills.

Duration: 3 hours

This workshop has a maximum capacity of 15 participants.

PENNY CRASWELL (LOCAL)
Penny Craswell began a professional writing diploma after completing her BA but gave up when she realised that, rather than writing articles for her lecturer, she could go out and write stories for an editor. While working full time, she researched and pitched stories to editors on the weekends. Thanks to a number of arts articles in TheSydney Morning Herald, Artlink, Art and Australia, Lino, and more, in 2005, Penny won an emerging writers grant from the Australia Council for the Arts as an arts writer. She completed an internship at interior design magazine Frame in Amsterdam. Penny is now assistant editor of Indesign magazine.
