Edith Piaf encapsulates our endless fascination with all things French, as her biographer Carolyn Burke so aptly demonstrates. Lucinda Holdforth introduces us to Parisiennes from Colette to Nancy Mitford, Marie Antoinette to Coco Chanel – rule-breakers and style-setters with a shared passion for Paris as the headquarters of femininity. They tell Lee Tulloch why “la vie française” has a certain “je ne sais quoi”.
