There is nothing more magnetic than a character skilled in the art of subterfuge. And the threat of deception exposed is one of the quiet thrills of reading fiction. Novelists Mark Henshaw (The Snow Kimono), Liane Moriarty (Big Little Lies) and Sascha Arango (The Truth and Other Lies) cast their heroes and heroines into the murky layers between truth and falsehood, ever proving Andre Malraux’s observation, ‘man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides’. They speak with presenter of ABC RN’s Books + Kate Evans.
Mark Henshaw (Australian)
Mark Henshaw has lived in France, Germany, Yugoslavia and the USA. He currently lives in Canberra. His first novel, Out of the Line of Fire, won the FAW Barbara Ramsden Award and the NBC New Writers Award. It was one of the biggest selling Australian literary novels of the decade and was re-released as a Text Classic in 2014. His most recent novel is The Snow Kimono.
Sascha Arango was born in Berlin in 1959 and is one of Germany's most prominent screenwriters. He also writes audio plays and stage plays and has won several prizes, including twice winning the Grimme Award, a leading German television prize. The Truth and Other Lies is his first novel.
Liane Moriarty is the author of six internationally bestselling novels, Three Wishes, The Last Anniversary, What Alice Forgot, The Hypnotist's Love Story and the no.1 New York Times bestsellers The Husband's Secret and Big Little Lies. Film rights to What Alice Forgot have been pre-empted by Sony TriStar with the Director of The Devil Wears Prada. Her most recent novel, Big Little Lies, sold over one million copies in the US alone, and as a result Liane became the first Australian author to have a novel debut at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Writing as L.M.Moriarty, Liane has also written a children’s book series, The Petrifying Problem with Princess Petronella, The Shocking Trouble on the Planet of Shobble and The Wicked War on the Planet of Whimsy. Liane lives in Sydney with her husband, son and daughter.
